Puppetry Studio: Puppet Play – Invitation to Conversation

Growing up with a Puppet

Puppetry Studio: Puppet Play – Invitation to Conversation

Since the autumn of 2006, Zagreb leaders of puppet amateur groups / workshops (educators and teachers previously - from 1992 to 1994 - trained at the Winter and Summer puppet school, and at the seminar ‘ABC of puppetry’) voluntarily gather at Puppetry Studio (LS) as well as the leaders of puppet amateur troupes / workshops (educators, teachers, professors) who explore puppetry techniques and contents acceptable for everyday work with children and young people, and also for children with special needs, because they are (according to their abilities) integrated into the regular pre-school programmes and the educational system.

Members of LS gather once a week (Thursday/Tuesday from 5 to 8/10 p.m.) at LK "Za bregom" (Local community "Cvjetnica", Vrbik 10, Zagreb). According to previously established six-month program, the major topics of research are transformed into an elaborate methodological unit with different variants of realisation, multiple endings, applications and elaborations. Namely, members of LS go through the collectively realised process of creative work once again, this time with preschool / school children (members of their educational group, or puppet group / workshop), and thus question / check / determine its acceptability and effectiveness.

The goal of the programme is to encourage and develop creativity in every child as a way of his personal growth integrated into communion. Puppet play, as a continuous process of individuation and socialisation, is always a call, an invitation to dialogue and conversation, meeting and getting to know oneself, the other or oneself in the other one.

The specificity of the LS work is in detecting, identifying and articulating of puppetness (a peculiarity that is best expressed with the puppet / object) within the familiar. Thus, in the recent period, members of LS have explored puppetness of the parts of the human body - HAND/S (with gloves and without them), of cutlery, fabrics of different textures, pieces of clothing ... After that, members of LS once again go through / question such created etudes with their educational groups (members of children puppet groups / workshops) and this time the work process is recorded, documented, and prepared for the eventual "puppet manual" for working with children. In this way created puppet plays / etudes direct the others to not finished but to an open creative process with obstacles and detours, and with many opportunities. A puppet play / etude so set turns unknown into knowledge, responds to inquiries, but also sets and reveals new mysteries.

All-day programme Puppet Play – Invitation to Conversation (follows) was first publicly presented for the CHILD’S RIGHTS DAY, 20 November 2008 at the Centre for Culture and Information Maksimir (Švarcova 18) in Zagreb. It was attended by about 150 participants, members of the puppet-theatre workshops, and 100 spectators watched the play Palunko’s Story. Admission was free.

Performer: Hrvoje Zalar

The programme was realised with the support of the City Office for Health, Labor, Social Welfare and Veterans of the City of Zagreb, and was in a two-day period form held again in 2009.

Second, work-presentational programme PUPPET PLAY - INVITATION TO CONVERSATION took place on 17 and 18 November 2009 at the co-organisers’ polyvalent great hall in the Center for Culture and Information Maksimir, Švarcova 18, in Zagreb.

In direct work with children - in a variety of puppetry workshops on the first day of the programme, the public were presented a variety of approaches, puppetry expressions and methods by previously trained educators and teachers from Zagreb. So Karmen Rodić (DV Botinec) finished the narrated and previously-played tale written by Marija Barbarić-Fanuko One Bird Sings in the Desert using pictures-children's works, while Ljiljana Lukarova-Božičević (DV Vladimir Nazor) focused a puppet workshop A Big and a Small Wave on the expressive possibilities of materials-pieces of textile of different colours and performed the same name story of Donald Bisset using them. Playing with pre-made laminated puppets-characters from the story of Marija Barbarić Fanuko Ballad of the Bear was the starting point for the multi-layered puppet play that was performed by Snježana Vuković and Biserka Halgaš (DV Kolibri). Gordana Kutleša (DV Prečko) performed Sunčana Škrinjarić’s short story Miss No through confession of a puppet character that was animated by a couple of animators. The aim of the workshop led by Mirjana Celić (DV Prečko) was to show that discarded stuffed animals can be shaped into interesting characters-hand puppets. Davorina Bakota (OŠ A. Mihanovića) presented her ten-year programme ‘One Class-One Theatre’ by puppet-film animation, with characters-puppets created of modeling clay.

Summary of the workshop part of the programme was designed for educators who use puppetry expression or wish to use it in their daily work with children.
With the lecture on ‘Child's Right to Participate in Daily Activities and Public Programmes’ given by a psychologist Mirjana Milanović, and a discussion with Zagreb educators and teachers on the same subject, the two-day event ended for about a hundred and fifty participants.

Growing up with a puppet at the kindergarten "Siget" in Zagreb

Organised puppet play as an everyday form of work in the educational process of preschool children at the same time encourages the child and completes the processes of individuation and socialisation. It opens and creates a number of creative ways, and can realise integral cognitive and artistic experiences.
Because of the theatrical act that always happens here and now, with a group of people / children divided into those who watch and listen and those who talk, play or present - puppet play opens up the whole space of constant vigilance and flow of spiritual, mental and cognitive content, thus becoming a child's everyday life.
By training of ten educators (at the seminar ABC OF PUPPETRY from September to December 2006) at Zagreb kindergarten "Siget", the first step in the realisation of the project "Growing up with a puppet" was made.

Separate and gradually guided parts of the project interact in the process of individuation (maturing of personality or exercising psychological integrity) and in the process of socialisation (the encounter with the other/s). These are:

INDIVIDUATION

- plays (January and February 2007)

- work on literary texts for children (March 2007)

- personal creativity of children / individual puppet etudes (April and May 2007)

SOCIALISATION

-
puppet children's workshop / group puppet etudes (May and June 2007)

- puppet workshop for educators:

a) weekly programmes in puppetry with puppet characters created by educators / preparation and realisation

b) narrating stories and presenting them by puppets / preparations

(a + b from September to December 2007 – continued, twice a week, from February to June 2008)

- a chamber puppet show by a professional puppet theatre at kindergarten (by choice of a pedagogue / educator; preparing children to watch; reception / experience of the show)
